I saw a product once in Poular Mechanics that was a snowboarding beanie made of a certain material that could withstand heavy impact. I was wodnering if anyone knew the brand and/or where I could find it.

Please just buy a real, safety approved helmet. Even if you are a good rider you can still be hit by someone else and these things can really save you.

Two years ago I saw this guy ripping up the slope and caught the edge on a lip of snow and sent him off the run into the trees - he ran directly into a tree and broke his board - it sounded terrible. He was a very good rider and had a helmet on - I'm convinced it saved his life.

It is probably this material known as d3o, that is soft and plyable under normal conditions but when impacted it turns hard. Kind of hard for me to explain but go to the website d3o.com and check it out.

They have a few beanies that have the material in them, the only problem is that they are only marketed in Europe as far as I know.
