I couldn't quite explain it the way I wanted so I searched it and here is what the net said:

People who are unhappy may get some consolation from knowing that others are unhappy too.

or

something that you say which means that people who are feeling sad usually want the people they are with to also feel sad.

it is what pope jaim said. but an example would be

if an underage smoker knew what they were doing was wrong but they don't want to stop they will try to persuade you into doing it to even if they know it's wrong why? coz some how it makes that person feel better knowing that they aren't the only ones.

People who have bad things happen to them, like to have other people know about their woes or like to know that other people are having problems of some kind also.

When you are in an unhappy predicament, you feel comfort finding someone else in that same predicament.
