all the sources i've look at just say he died, not how or why. was it just old age?

He supposedly contacted cholera on a visit to New Orleans. Whether or not this is true, his presidency took a toll on his health. He had the shortest 'retirement' of any US president, just over three months. He definitely didn't die of old age, he was only 53.
