When the weather gets cooler, the problem gets worse. The smell begins as soon as the car is moving and continues to get worse. We are all experiencing health problems that I fear may be related to this, headaches, nausia, and dizziness after riding in the car. The car is a 1986 Toyota Camry. I can't tell where the exhaust is coming from so I don't know how to fix it. HELP!!!!

do not drive the car!
you are slowly poisoning yourself with carbon monoxide.
this is really serious and dangerous, get it checked quickly. look at whole exhaust from manifold to tailpipe for looseness, fractures or missing bits. look at all the door and boot seals for areas it could be leaking. look at underbody and firewall for access points for the fumes.

do it now

Hi, the Toyota Camry, particularly until about 97 to 98 all have similar exhaust problems. Due primarily to the "flex hose" portion of the exhaust pipe. These are made of a material that rusts very easily. It is located in between your engine and catalytic convertor on your car. Right below your feet. They may or may not have a exhaust leak sound that is typical, it can be a buzz, rattle or small whistle. The positioning of the flex hose that fails is right before your gear shift mechanism which has rubber gasket, which at 21 years old i assume doesn't help hold those fumes out. If this gasket is bad it has a direct path into your vehicles cabin and will cause this problem!!! Take a quick peek under your car to listen for this noise. If your car is a 5 speed this is definitely your problem and you need to take it to a reputable muffler/exhaust shop and they can install a new flex hose for roughly 40-60 dollars. Hope it works and this helps!!!

well im sorry to see some brainless people such as john d make such a comment, please dont let him bother you. My suggestion would be for you to take your car immediately to a reputable repair facility or a reputable muffler shop. Tell them what is going on. It is very evident that you have a exhaust leak and is dangerous because you are breathing in carbon monoxide , a colorless and odorless but deadly gas which is causing those headaches, nausia, and dizziness, along with the fumes that you can smell. Please have this checked immediately. not in a few days or next week, IMMEDIATELY! Im not yelling at you, just stressing the seriousness of this. Your car is a death trap to anyone who rides in it until you this this problem fixed.

I had a problem with my car having a strong exhaust smell. It was OK while warming up or setting idling, only when driving down the road. I ended up fixing it by changing out the trunk gasket.

You've got a leaking exhaust. I would suggest you get it fixed ASAP and keep the windows down in the meantime, unless you like carbon monoxide poisoning.

Stop driving it for now.

Have it taken to a shop and find the exhaust leak.

There is no doubt that the symptoms you are describing could well be related to the leak.
