I don't think it is essential to hate or dislike any team. Just because many Yankee fans hate the Red Sox (and vice versa) doesn't mean that you have to also. It's your choice. I would hate to be made to hate the Cubs. I'm like you. Hate is too strong of a word. I just dislike for the Cubs. Ignore the people who say otherwise.

Of course not. I am a Red Sox fan I I don't hate any team, I just hate their attitudes when they lose and then call us names. Yankees/Red Sox has always been a very strong rivalry, but that should only go so far. If a team is doing well then good sportsmanship should come into play and congratulations handed out instead of insults. The Yankees played a good season, but we (the Red Sox) played a little bit better this year.

Let me answer by copying my answer to a similar question from yesterday. We are life long die hard Red Sox fans but I think that Donna and Yankees 2 have got it right.

How can you hate the Red Sox ? The bullpen is loose and fun to watch. Jon Papelbon is hilarious off the mound and focussed like a laser when he is pitching.

Manny Ramirez is a talented baseball player - excentric yes - but he is considered to be a good guy and lovable.

David Ortiz lives up to his name "Big Papi" even though he is about 5 years younger than Manny.

Varitek is all business, Pedroia and Youkilis are young guys and full of testosterone...

Jake Ellsbury is a treat to watch and veteran Mike Lowell is total pro.

I think its possible to not want the Sox to win but to hate them makes no sense.

As a Boston fan, I "hate" the Yankees but the current group of Yankees in the Torre era made real hatred impossible.

How could anybody hate Paul O'Neil or Bernie Williams, How can you really hate Derek Jeter ? How can you hate Robinson Cano or Melkie Cabrera ? And one more thing....if Joe Torre ever walked into Fenway Park and down the aisle to a front row seat near the Red Sox dugout, ALL 35,000 FANS IN FENWAY PARK WOULD RISE AND GIVE MR. TORRE A STANDING OVATION. Trust me on this.

Red Sox fans don't hate New York. We hate the Yankees. There is a difference.

No because their pitching coach will be your Manager next year and Arod will be a Redsox on opening day 2008 so you can cheer for both teams!!!!!!!

also i agree with gottalo in that you hate the teams but not the players or cities. Derek Jeter would be a legend in Boston and Ted Williams would have been an amazing Yankee (he is a war hero and would have been war-shipped in NY)

it's mandatory for a Yankees fan to hate the red sox,j.k.just support your team, and not the rivals.in my opinion, red sox can go kiss my *** with the rest of the "nation".

The only requirement of any fan is to stick with your team through thick and thin. I would venture to guess that there will be fewer Yankees fans next year.

Yes, it is. When you are a Yankee fan, it is essential to hate the Red Sox, just like if you are a living thing, it is essential to breathe air, and drink water.

Not really. I'm a Yankees fan, and infact, I was rooting for the RedSox since day 1 when they played against The Rockies.

Completely inextricable. You love one, you hate the other.

I wish every Red Sox player and fan would fall in a sewer and die. And they wish that I would.

It's not personal; it's just something intrinsic to being a fan of either team.

At the rate and in the direction the Yankees are going, I may have to convert to Pity soon.

Not much pity, mind you. Just a wee bit.
