what are the fines of having a unpapered ferret in California?

First off, another answerer stated that there were no fines, and that ferrets were rodents. While I am sure she answered to the best of her knowledge, that is not true on either count.

It is nearly impossible to get a license to own ferrets in California unless you are displaying them in a public venture; you pay a hefty fine (around 300 dollars, if I remember right) for them to decide that you aren't suitable as a private owner, whether you are or not, and you don't get your money back. Plus, they are alerted to the fact that you WANT ferrets and if they suspect you of getting ferrets illegally, they will be on the lookout for it.

It is a 2,000-3,000 dollar fine per ferret if found, and your ferrets could be euthanized. You DO have the right to say that you want your ferret to be sent out of state to a rescue facility, but sometimes the courts refuse that and euthanize them anyway. If you have ferrets in California, you must be incredibly secretive about it.

They make great pets, and hopefully the laws will be overturned soon, but for all of us pro-ferret Californians, all of our efforts of bills and petitions for ferrets to be legalized have been declined or torn down. That is one more reason that I am moving to Massachusetts ;-).

As far as what I said earlier regarding ferrets not being rodents; they are in the mustelid family, not the rodent family. They are related to otters, skunks, minks, weasels, and badgers, rather than rats, mice, chinchillas, or beavers.

Good luck; I hope that helps!

Sorry, Destiny-- a ferret is NOT a rodent; it's a member of the weasel family.
I know several people in CA who have ferrets, but they don't advertise the fact by taking them out on a leash or ride with them in the car.
What CA Fish and Game don't seem to realize is that ferrets are typically neutered and have their scent glands removed before they are sold in pet stores in other states.
