Since there are 11 teams - seems odd. Perhaps there are computational issues? This has to have been asked before.

When the Big Eight added four teams to become the Big 12, they applied for copyright status on Big Nine, Big 11, Big 12 and several other names.

When the Big Ten added Penn State, they were prohibited from changing their name to Big 11 unless they bought the copyright from the Big 12.

Because the big 10 is the oldest NCAA conference. They didnt want to change a classic name.
