The Long Hard Road Out of Hell (Paperback)
by Marilyn Manson (Author)
"One doesn't usually think of rock stars as insightful, but, against all odds, glam-trash superstar Marilyn Manson has written a book that is actually an intelligent look at growing up. This autobiographical bildungsroman brings out the creepiest aspects of childhood, conveying the terror and fascination that young Marilyn (then called Brian) felt when looking through his grandfather's pornography, getting his first French kiss, and being taunted by the girls he wanted to "date." Manson has the benefit of having grown up as an outcast and loser and then having become a star without forgetting what he went through. This gives him an incredibly broad perspective, which he brings to bear on his ordinary life in order to convey the more potent and frightening moments that shaped him into the pale-skinned weirdo that the Christian Right loves to hate. Best of all, Manson is shockingly honest, and portrays himself as occasionally stupid, self-centered, over-sensitive, ignoble, and, mostly, highly fallible and human. It's a long way from the auto-hagiographies that other stars have written, and it's easily one of the best reads in celebrity bio."

And here's a review from a fan:
"Easy Interesting Read
by pandora peroxide - written on 10.04.02 - Rating: (5 of 5 possible stars)
Advantages great fun, loads of facts for the fans
Disadvantages you'll need an open mind
As a Marilyn Manson fan I suppose you'd think I'd be biased. Well I am in a way but let's get one thing straight. I didn't think that this book would be as good as it is.
The book chronicals Manson's life from the childhood Brian Warner at religious school, through the kid who finds weird porn in his grandfathers basement, through the high school misfit, through girls and drugs and band members, a seedy journalism article until you meet the Marilyn Manson of the moment; a strong articulate man with opinions on everything - some of the more mainstream than many would like to acknowledge.
The book is written in a narrative style accompanied with pictures by professionals and from the Warner family albums. There is a dark humour to the book which many fans will appreciate.
How anyone can fail to sympathise with young Brian getting snot on him off a girlfriend orcringe as he gets lice off a tanning bed. I was intrigued yet repulsed by his descriptions of his drug fuelled antics.
The section on his meeting Anton La Vey and becoming a minister of the Church of Satan will clarify for many what exaclty this entails.
At the end of the book there are a series of witness statements and internet rumours detailing antics that Manson is said to have particpated in. The inclusion of this shows just how much he revels in being the Antichrist Superstar how he courts his publicity and is not above laughing at people.
This book should be read by Manson fans and Manson haters alike. It will be an entertaining read for all and you never know if you open your mind you may realise that the man in black isn't as bad as you think!!!
