Just because you don't rhyme about guns and drugs that doesn't automatically make you intelligent. I mean, listening to black maybe made me question his whole style.

Depends what you mean by intelligent. Is he some philosophical genius? No. Is he more aware than many other rappers? Yes. That's why he is different and his rhymes aren't filled with blatant homophobia and sexism. Common is just a socially aware rapper and one the greatest lyricists of all-time, combine them together and he comes off very intelligent.

I don't know about him being intelligent, but he does come off as being a wise guy. And I don't think it has anything to do with what he raps about, its how he carries himself. He seems aware of whats goin on in the world when there's some rappers who don't give a damn. He also seems levelheaded, like the type that'll go to a party and get his drink and his smoke on, but be smart enough to know he can't get too deep in it. You know? And like I said, its some rappers that talk like they need a liver transplant and the worst case of the munchies you ever seen...
Intelligent? Maybe
Wise? yes... wiser than most rappers at least.

I agree with Evil a bit and you...it really doesnt necessarily make him smart... Im pretty sure there is a rapper who talks about drugs and guns that is smarter than him, but they rather talk about something different

I Know, SO MANY PEOPLE think the is "Good", and "Intellegent" because he "raps about good stuff"...JESUS!!! I really don't think he's that much smarter than any other rapper..well..maybe a little bit, but I do'nt consider him some sort of genius...
And I do genuinly enjoy him as a rapper....

Smart rhymers come up with smart rhymes. I'm not talking about what he is rhyming about, but if he can rhyme about that with multi-syllables, clever similes and metaphors, and nice wordplay then he is intelligent.

I don't think he is dumb or overly intelligent but I think he's got more knowledge about the game itself and he probably is more conscious. To me a conscious rapper is smarter by default.

the whole concept about "oh you got to be intelligent to do music" is something created by haters who take it as excuse for why they don't like hiphop. In my opinion dude you shouldn't take it so seriously.

To an extent. If you can deviate from rapping about stuff that everyone else does, then that makes you smart and it makes you real. He's no einstein, but he knows what he's talking about it, and he doesn't go overboard (like IT).
