The only two things that the divorce stated was that I go back to my maiden name and that our marriage be dissolved. Will I get something in the mail. I will ask my lawyer tomorrow, but I didn't know if any of you knew since I'm curious now.

If the decree has been signed and the restoration of your maiden name was in it, then you will probably need to go to the Clerk's office and get a few certified copies of it to file with various places--the driver's license bureau will require a certified copy, as will your bank and, most probably, your credit card companies. You will need to take regular xeroxed copies to places like your video rental place and the library. I had my name legally changed last November and, so far, I've had to change it in 61 different places!!! I will NEVER change my name again. I wouldn't change it to Gates or Turner if I married Bill or Ted. No thanks!!! Never again. It's way too much trouble. I was born with the name that I am going to die with--God as my judge!!!

Good luck.

You don't have to wait until the divorce is final before you go back to your maiden name. You can change it at any time, married or not. You will have to go to the Social Security Administration (they won't do it through mail or email; you have to go in person) and stand in line for no less than 3 hours, show 2 forms of ID (birth certificate, etc.) and it will take a week or two to get your new SS card in the mail with your new name on it. That will take care of changing it legally.

Then you will have to notify everybody else--work place, friends, relatives, doctor's office, school, etc., about your name change. This is why I just kept my married name after I divorced!! Too much of a pain!

You should be notified of a finalcourt date in which the Judge signs the final papers barring any problems. If this is so stated in the final papers, notify the Social Security Dept.of such as soon as the final papers are signed. The Judge will let you now usually

Every state is different but I got a paper from the judge when I was in court and my divorce became final. It feels great to have my name back.
