Is it a mathematical sum?

Because that's the amount of gold Solomon received in a year.

It is not just a mathematical sum.

Look carefully at the actual text and you will note that John did not write “666 (“six hundred threescore and six”) is the mark of the beast, nor did he say “666” is the number of the beast. He specifically and purposefully wrote that the number “666 corresponded to” the “number of the beast which is the number of a man, and his number is six hundred threescore and six.” Neither did John say: “..is the number of man (as in ‘mankind’),” but he specifically wrote: “…is the number of a man,” meaning a particular man.

That particular man to whom John was pointing those “who hath understanding,” is Solomon. “His number” corresponds to “money” as in the amount of “gold” he received in a one-year period:

“Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred threescore and six talents of gold.” (I Kings 10:14)

“Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred and threescore and six talents of gold;” (II Chronicles 9:13)

The number '666' refers to nothing more or less than MONEY!

Gematria is a form of numerology. The idea being that every letter has a numerical value so certain words i.e; the Hebrew names fo God have the same numeric value.
Because of translation and variations in spelling the name of the beast is either thought to be the numbers 666 or 616, this is still open for debate. It is taken from a passage in the Bible which actually refers to the Emperor Nero and the Roman Empire.
In the Hebrew world these were the beasts of the time.

There are a few ways people think this came to be.

The reality is, is that when that was formed and by the people that started that up.. many measurements stopped at the number 6.

Because of this, 666 is an attempted to be beyond the limits,... better then the best posible.

To deal with this later, when it spread to people that did not have the same thought and number systems.. 7 became the number of God. It was just an attempt to think of something to answer questions of people that did not have any understanding of 666.

Think of it as when children play that game where they keep one upping each other,.. the last thing someone can call is " Inifinite plus one". Well 666 is like the Beast pulling that " Infinite plus one" when competeing with forces, powers, and ablities.

Like wise it feels that picking 7 was just as childish. And previously it likely was that the number God should have been assosiated with is 6 given how this little battleing game goes.

Actually, the real number of the beast is 616, but improper translation has lent us the common 666. It's believed that it is a numerical representation of Nero, the Roman emperor who Christians were not fond of.

This number at times represents imperfection. The number of “the wild beast” is 666 and is called “a man’s number,” indicating that it has to do with imperfect, fallen man, and it seems to symbolize the imperfection of that which is represented by “the wild beast.” The number six being emphasized to a third degree (the six appearing in the position of units, tens, and hundreds) therefore highlights the imperfection and deficiency of that which the beast represents, or pictures.

I watched a documentary a while back that interviewed Satanists. They all said that 666 has nothing to do with Satan and they don't know where the origins of 666 came from.

No, it represents how the beast is fallen. The number 6 is short of the number 7, commonly used by God (7 days of creation, etc).

It could be.

I heard an interesting theory, though: A minister said that the ancientHebrew (or is it Greek?) translation of 666 looks something like IIIIIIIIII....a bar code???

Hmmmmmm

According to the original scriptures the bible was alledgedly translated from, the "number of the beast" was 616, but someone messed up and mistranslated it. The error was only discovered relatively recently.
