I think it had always been popular, except that now it's getting increasingly popular. For one, younger drivers are joining the sport (F1) so people are interested to see how good they are and how much potential they have.

Motor sports in the rest of the world has been very popular for years. Series like Formula 1, WRC, BTCC.
Over the last couple of years the Nascar series has becoming ever so popular. More then likely because to start and run a team is so cheap in comparison. And the exposure is so broad that sponsors get alot of exposure for there product for a small investment.
