I have a 5x7 Big Tex trailer and I just removed the wood floor from it. The screws holding the wood to the metal are rusted and wont come out. I need to cut and drill them out, but I cant seem to make do it. I am using a 7 amp drill and titanium bits. I can't make any head way on the bolts that I cut at the angle iron.. What am I doing wrong? I am replacing the wood floor and need to drill out the holes to bolt the new floor down. The bits just spin. I have new bits.

Have you tried a grinder. More than likely the bolts are grade 8 which are hardened steel. The only other way to get them out is to use a cutting torch, if you want to keep the holes undamaged the grinder is the way to go.

If I could see a picture it would help. I am assuming that the bolt head is what you are trying to drill out. One way is to soften the bolt material. Take a propane torch, get the head very hot. This will soften the metal. Then when you think it is cool enough to work with drill it out. The first drill bit to use is the smallest one in the set. Then use successively larger ones. Or another way if you have room is to use a right angle grinder to simply grind them away.

grind the heads off the rusted bolts to a flat surface then get a center punch and mark the center of the bolt and try drilling with a small drill bit 1st then go up in size to suit.

If too much trouble then simply redrill new holes and use new screws.

Borrow a torch from a friend and cut the rusted bolts out or make new holes for your bolts and washers to mount the new wood floor... good luck...

The easiest thing to do is to grind the screws flush. Then cut and place the boards and mark them with the centerline of the angles. Then drill thru the board and into the angle at the same time. Then use self threading screws to attach the boards>
