As you have already summized by the responses herein
the size of the ears is the most readily recognizable way of telling the difference between these two --- Indian elephants having the smaller ears and tusks --- but, they are also somewhat smaller overall than the African elephant -- but, this is not so readily noticable since a smaller or more immature African elephant can appear in size much like the fully mature Indian variety !!

Apart from the many physical differences mentioned, African elephants are difficult to tame, whereas Indian elephants have been used as working and ceremonial animals for a very long time.

The Asian (Indian) elephant weighs between 3-4 tons while the African elephant weighs between 4-7 tons.
The Asian elephant has a finger at the tip of its trunk while the African elephant has two fingers at the tip of its trunk.
The Asian elephant retains more hair then the African elephant.

Off the top of my head the differences are:
1. Africans have larger ears like mentioned. They are shaped like Africa and Indian elephant is shaped like India. This is because the African elephant lives in hotter sunnier areas and the ears are used to cool the animal.
2. Africans are slightly larger on average though the record is held by an Indian (of course he was a tame elephant and fed VERY WELL.
3. Indian elephants have a dome shaped head. African elephants have a sloping forehead.
4. Indian elephants have two fingers on the trunk (One on top one on bottom) Africans have three (One on top two on bottom) (that said I hope I do not have the two species reversed on that fact).
5. African elephants (except those from the Adda bush in South Africa) have larger straighter tusks.
6. Africans tend to be more aggressive, and somewhat harder to tame.
BTW there are places in africa which give tours on back of african elephants so they can be tamed though it is harder.
