They told me to come back in 6 months for another pap smear...they said in the letter to not be alarmed...but Im just wondering what the possibilities were....

your pap more than likely came back as ASCUS. atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance.
they are right, its probably nothing... alot of things can aggravate the cervix (which is where the cells come from when they do a pap).. wearing a tampon, having sex, using douche.. etc.etc.etc
they want you to come back in 6 mths so they can retest you.
alot of times they will ask you to come back in 3 mths, because it takes that long for the cells on your cervix to re grow again.
if the next one comes back the same, then ask them to test you for HPV. and ask them to do further testing like a colpo.

Atypical cells means that there's a possible problem with the cells of your cervix. It's not as bad as abnormal, but it does bear watching.

I'm surprised they're waiting six months. I had an atypical a few years ago and they brought me back a few weeks later. That turned out abnormal, I had a colposcopy, which turned out normal. I haven't had an abormal one since.
