We had some electrical work started four weeks ago. The electrcian keeps making excuses about when he can come over to complete the job: does not have the right tool, is sick, it's raining, just fired a worker, etc. We owe him $200 but that is not enough to pay someone what still needs to be done. What is our next step?

If you have a contract with him does it specify a completion date, or is it time and material? If it has a definite completion date report him to the Local Licensing Authority, they will take appropriate action against him and suggest your other remedies, ( different contractor to complete at the original contractors cost, etc. ) If it is a Time and Material contract you don't have to many options, as he can only charge you for actual time on the job, but completion is more at his discretion unless you can prove an emergency need of some sort.

Is he a licensed and bonded electrician, and did you have a written contract?

If bonded, find out who is bond is held with and talk with a lawyer about suing him. If not, go to small claims court. if the wor is incomplete, you can pay for another contractor, then sue the original contractor for the cost over and above what you would have paid.

Good luck.

You need to let him know either by text e-mail or telephone that you need the job doing and therefore if he can not do the job by (whatever date you pick) you will have to employ someone else to finish the job and therefore the new electricain will receive the fee. You are in charge not him. If he thinks you will wait .........you will! Easier said than done though.... be firm!!!

And when you get done with him, whether he finally completes the job or not, report him to the Better Business Bureau in your area.
