I'd say true. People feel safer when they know something. Change and the unknown is scary. And death is the ulimate unknown.

I believe it is true for those who believe there is life after death. They cannot know what it will be like, and even if they believe it is all "heavenly," there must be some fear that their faith may have been in vain and "heaven" will be bad or non-existent. If it is non-existent, then they fear the loss of their self-identity.
I do not believe in life after death. So I do not fear the unknown of darkness and death. And of things that are of "darkness" but not of death, reason is the light to knowledge.

False. It's not the unknowns of death and darkness that I fear, but the knowns. No more experiencing of life is a pretty big negative in my book.

Completely true because people are afraid of the unknown. It's a common fact, supported by everyday fears like the dark, or yes, death. We are afraid of these things because we know not what happens in them - have you ever spoken to a dead person? Have they ever told you about death? Obviously not, and we are afraid of what happens to us.

This is the reason people have religion. So they have no reason to be afraid, facing death.

I totally disagree with that statement.
Firstly, It equates death with darkness. No one knows if death is truly darkness because there is no one here who is dead. If you are dead and you are reading this, I would truly like to meet you.
Secondly, The unknown is what I live for. The process is called learning. Sad is the man who doesn't wish to learn. I don't necessarily want to die. I simply wish to live in order to be able to learn what this life has to offer. In that line of thought, physical death may just be another state of existence which has its own lessons to be learned.
The only fear I have regarding death is the possibility that my learning may come to an end.

False. When we look upon death(I don't know about darkness)it is usually with the prospect of accompanying pain that is most feared.

Very few people die nowadays a natural, painless death. If not by accident - most commonly via an automobile - then in a hospital or hospice, doped to the gills with morphine or what have you.

May I inquire, from what source did you excerpt your quotation? Sounds like it might have be a poem of Gerad Manley Hopkins.

Anyway, thanks for the question; it was an interesting one.

I think it depends on the individual concerned, but conversely it can be noted that the unknown is the only thing we can truly explore. It can be an adventure and learning experience just as much as a source of fear.
After all, its only unknown till you get there...

If its death your scared about then all i can say is Dont be afraid. My mom passed away 2 weeks ago and for me only being 15, the experience of loosing my momma was quite depressing the the death process and all is quite fascinating really. I wouldn't be afraid. She came back to me in a dream once and she told me that every thing was wonderful.
