What would happen if the earth were tilted at 45 degrees? What would happen if the earth were not tilted at all? What would be the effect of the two scenarios on the subsolar point at the equinoxes and solstices as well as the circle of illumination.

Well, the earth is tilted, but not at 45 degrees. If it was, the seasons winter and summer would be even more cold and hot, and if it wasn't tilted at all, we would only have the seasons spring and fall.

Unfortunately, the rest of your terms are unknown to me, so i suppose i can pitch away all hopes of a "best answer"

the summers and winters would be so fierce that it's unlikely anyone would survive.all the polar ice would melt in the summer and everything from the equator down or up depending on the hemisphere, would freeze solid in the winter. not a nice scenario. and some people say that things are the way they are just by accident. take another look.
