Just curious - if our choice for the next President were either an atheist or a Muslim, which would most Americans vote for?

I'm going with the atheist myself.

Since I am an atheist I would go with the atheist, but it doesn't really matter. If this country lasts for another 100 years, which is far from certain, I highly doubt either will happen. We might see more atheists and Muslims elected congress, but I don't see it happening for President. It's like half of all Christians in the US, maybe more, would never vote for anything but a Christian for President. Maybe a Jewish person will get elected, but even that wouldn't be easy. That's unfortunate, it's really issues and real leadership skills that should matter the most. Look at what 8 years of a lazy, ignorant, unqualified Christian has got us.

Not Serious Answer- Since the people already elected Bush twice, I figure they'd stick with an atheist for the next election.

Actual answer- Probably a Muslim, actually. Aside from some serious problems with the religion, Americans still like people that believe in a God over an atheist any day of the week. Also, just some demographics, Muslims make up to 2.2% of the American Population, those who actively claim to be atheists (as opposed to spiritual or agnostic) are only .4% of the American population.

Personally, I'd go with the one I thought was the best candidate.

But--given the 6 years of the neoconservative campaign of religious hatered and bigotry against Muslims, I don't think a Muslim candidate would win right now.

Yeah, and wasn't it the Pakistani president that became killed by ability of fellow Muslims. the united states of a isn't anti woman... however the monolithic media consisting often of CNNBS, NBS, PMSNBS, ABS and CBS all hate women, yet they are genuinely state controlled.... by ability of the Democrat social gathering. seem on the way they taken care of Hillary, Sarah Palin and now Michele Bachman... it type of feels they fairly hate clever women.

I prefer an atheist anytime, it is about time atheists had some power.

Muslims should show me one single well run Muslim country
out of the massive Muslim world which has about 1.4 billion Muslims in it

Even though i'm roman catholic i would chose a muslim. They have a God unlike atheists and they arn't half bad people. I dated a muslim guy. Really it depends on the person. I think an Atheist would just destroy our enviornment more with new ideas of creating new technologies with his sciences. A relgion with God and morals i prefer more..
sorry just personal choice,

I would vote for an atheist because the choices of the president will be based on fact, not this brainwashed god crap

I'd probably vote for an atheist. I think mixing religion and government makes a toxic brew, and it's been poisoning political discourse in this country. I think it's time we had someone set a policy course based on logic rather than faith.

Some level of intelligence and competence should outweigh factors like gender, skin color or religious heritage.

Suppose the atheist pretends to be religious because that would get her elected. Would you be happy with a hypocrit in office?

I think we have had many atheist presidents, they just act religious to get elected.

I'd be happy is religious beliefs an nonbeliefs were not even mentioned in the election process. I could care less.
