My ex-husband opened up at least two joint bank accounts that I never knew about, while we were separated. After racked up credit cards, he had his name removed off the account, claiming it was hurting his credit. So, we were officially divorced 2 weeks ago, and I'm left with the open accounts that I had nothing to do with.

I called the police because the fraud department told me I should make a police statment, and they wouldn't help... they just told me to get an attourney. HELP!

Our divorce was non-contested, I have never had a lawyer.

Lisa that was great advice! Get an attorney. If your husbands name was on the account, and he racked up bills on it, the paper trail will show his name and his only on the receipts. If he can prove that you signed for the card on the application you are in hot water. However, since you didn't call the credit card company and tell them that you are not responsible for the cards since "you" never requested them! "They" will start proceedings against him too if he fraudulently signed your signature to the account application. He is doomed, you will be clear! Note, call your ex and tell him this stuff, and say you will begin proceedings against this fraud if he doesn't get a loan and pay them off. By the way, why didn't you get half of the stuff he purchaced on the card?

You definately ought to document a police document as quickly as achievable. Take copies of the police document to the banks he opened the debts with and talk with a supervisor. Request that the banks grant you with a written assertion that they have gained the police comments and properly known the reality that the debts have been opened without "your" signature or your information. shop the police document and those statements risk-free for years yet to come returned. The banks might do what the police won't. between different issues they might document a grievance against your ex at the same time with your AG.and in all probability document costs against your ex for fraud. the swifter you document a police document the extra advantageous. it could at last come right down to the place you like an lawyer, yet you're able to by no potential might desire to if the banks shelter it wisely.

If you didn't sign anything to add your name on the account you aren't responsible for them. Also if they weren't disclosed in the divorce settlement then you need to take it back to your divorce attorney and let him advise you. But either way you need a lawyer. I agree the police should be able to handle it but you have to remember they are some of the laziest people on earth and unless you force them they won't do a thing.

You have divorce lawyer. He/she needs to talk to the court as your ex didn't disclose all his debt. If you aren't on those accounts, you shouldn't be liable.
