you can not be pro-choice and pro-life? what is wrong with personally being against abortion but believing in a womans right to choose? is it always assumed that the right to choose means you will choose abortion? can't you choose adoption. how can i be pro-life and support death penalty? is there a way to openly discuss this issue? are there any answers that don't involve name calling?

I think it goes back to elementary school and being told so often to find the lowest common denominator...people tend to think that applies to everything. :-)

So, they devolve the issue of abortion to the lowest common denominator...life/death...and then demand that you apply that choice in all situations and to all issues. Therefore, you cannot be against abortion and for the war, or for abortion and against the death penalty.

And as you pointed out, they interpret "for" as in "enthusiastically advocating", and "against" as "vehemently opposed", without regard for the subtleties of attitudes that exist between the poles.

I don't think black-and-white thinkers and gray thinkers can communicate very easily...they speak different languages. (Another question just asked about black-and-white thinkers, so the phrase is stuck in my head.)
