The word "ethic" is the clue. Ethics are subjective. They change per social whims, transient values and cultural impositions. For example, the "proper" work ethic of a plantation slave is not the same work ethic of a modern day farmer. Many notions about "work ethic" in western civilization generate from Christian beliefs related to worship and servitude to overlords, that a "good" man was a man who worked himself to the bone for his master. Christian cultures tied "goodness" in with docile, compliant servitude and used fear of everlasting damnation and the threat of Hell as punishment to "motivate" people to work harder and more obediently.
