I'd have to say the one which generated the 2004 Tsunami in the Indian Ocean...it's killed more people than any other in recent recorded history. Japan has had much bigger earthquakes which have killed more people than any USA earthquake, but I don't know of any by name. Afghanistan has probably more earthquakes per year than any other country, averaging about 2 per DAY,although some may not even be felt.
But my vote goes to the killer-tsunami-producing 9.2 earthquake in the Indian ocean.

First one I thought of was 1906 San Francisco, second was 1989 San Francisco.

But I'm an American, perhaps people in other places have a different most famous one in mind.
