No - the wheel bearings can make noise, but if it freezes up the wheel won't turn at all and you'd have more problems than not being able to shift into AWD. The problem is likely to be with the transfer case - tht is what connects the front and rear drive systems together.

I even have considered rear wheel force autos contained in the snow and that they skid around. Any bad bearing should be changed no matter what. I can become unsafe to drive and if not attended in time it could be very costly
