I think its because legally they are not husband and wife in the USA. Apparently you don't understand what the legal system, the one which will make all your decisions for you in the event of an unexpected illness or death, because you, no matter how long you have lived together, have no legal right to do so.

Marriage is when two people vow eternal love, and life together as one whether it be in a church full of people, or at a court house. Two people living together haven't made that commitment, and cannot claim the title "husband and wife." I never understood why my friends "aren't ready" for marriage, but are ready to go through the motions of married life, and have been doing so for the past four years.

The bottom line is, if you are married you can say my husband or my wife. If you are living together there is no marital commitment in that relationship. You are not under a marriage contract that gives you the right to express that he or she is my spouse.

You`re only husband and wife if you are married. If you`re co-habiting then it`s some other relationship like partners or something. Although not so used these days that`s something that getting married gives you the title "husband" or "wife"

Because they aren't? A married couple are eachother's next of kin. A cohabiting couple's legal status is "friends."

It is because they aren't husband and wife unless they are married, so it wouldn't be honest or appropriate.
Many couples live together and don't get married...thus they are not husband and wife. Do you not understand the difference?

Cohabitation: an emotional and physical intimate relationship which includes a common living place and which exists without legal or religious sanction.

I don't understand your question but some people live together because its a pain to be married. It can cost people money. Older people for example who are collecting social security lose some of their income if they marry. Sad fact but true.
Marriage is a state of mind...doesn't really matter if you have a piece of paper from some state to prove it. A committed couple is committed ....paper or not.
