As salaamu 'alaikym, my friend.
Insha'Allah, no. I lived through the sixties and the seventies (Alhumdulillah!) and it was a very different era.
The idealism of that era is gone as well as the willingness to get involved in social issues.
You may have read about the protest that took place during the Viet Nam policing action (it was never declared a war although I don't remember arresting any Viet Cong...) so as to end the same. Nothing even remotely similar is happening in regards to the Iraq mess.
Thousands of people rallied at the White House calling for Nixon's impeachment but virtually no one is out there doing that daily to try to rid this nation of Bush and Cheney.
You may have also read about the civil rights movement of the sixties that also went on into the seventies, as well as movements aimed at helping the homeless, educational programs, etc.
Today, I see many young people dressing in trendy clothes, coloring their hair which is cut in some very interesting do's and styles. I hear them mumble and complain about having nothing to do and I see them doing just that.
It took more than clothes to make one a hippie and the idealism that is necessary just doesn't seem to be in the youth of today. I really wish that it was as such might help to make this a much better country.
Ma'a salaam.
