If you do not book in advance trains in this country are very expensive. Find a site to check time tables and book on line.

Well I suppose it depends where in London you are going. If you just mean within Greater London from the North then it would be about 5 or 6 hours (depending on time of day). But be aware that once you're in London it can take up to 2 hours to get across it at certain times of the day.

Both these sites can give you the details for the traintrip, the first just does trains, the second all kinds of travel, public transport and car routes, door to door.

It seems there is a direct train at least once an hour between Liverpool Lime street and London Euston. Takes about 2.30 hours.
A ticket for tomorrow will cost you almost £ 60, but if you book father ahead you might get it much cheaper.

As for trains, I do not know but I do know of National Express, it's a bus. http://www.nationalexpress.com/ .

As for schedules, it can be from 5 hours and up. And can cost about £20.00 and up. It all depends.

Hope this helps.
