I live on the 2nd floor of my apartment building. I lock my doors (even when I'm at home) and I have renter's insurance, so even if some enterprising burglar with a ladder gets in, I'm covered.

An up and close experience in Vietnam with a gun, know how to use it, not afraid to use it, and will use it (it's legal in FL now)
Also locks that work, a loud and noisy dog, a noisier neighbor, a noisier wife.
