There is some black tar looking stuff around the lock ring that can be problematic.
The INNER ring is the one that moves\loosens. NOT the outer ring...
It won't fully unscrew, just turns about 1/8th rotation then the pump Assy. should lift -tilt out.
It's pretty simple to replace.

Question? Are you saying that you have 2 tanks, one off and one on, or is it just the 1 tank?
It's not that hard to change the pump, or the filter if the tank is already off. A hammer and screwdriver can be used to tap the lockring loose, and then you just pull it out.
If the tank is still on the truck, you'll have to jack the truck up high enough in order to get the tank off. Open your gas flap, and take out the screws, undo any wiring and hoses, remove the 2 bolts holding the straps, and the tank will come down.
Then it's out with the old, and in with the new.

Come on now, your a girl... If it was so easy to do manly things why would you guys keep us around... If your boyfriend can't do it what makes you think you can? I suggest you seek professional help, you said your truck was from the midwest, and was rusted out. That probably means there's rust on the bolts holding the tank in. Those bolts are put in, in the factory, with an impact wrench and since they are up on the frame, and a cheater bar can't be used, I suggest you recruit the help of someone with an impact wrench. You also need to try and drain the fuel in the tank to make it much lighter and easier to manage. Remember, each gallon of fuel adds eight pounds to your tank. Good Luck!!!

There are problems replacing a fuel pump in the tank, such as:
1. The fuel itself, being flamable, you have to be careful of sparks which could be disastrous.
2. Leaks. It has to be water tight and not leak.
3. The gas gauge is in there too, and it wont work if you mess it up.
4. It is hard to work on under the truck, especially with gas running down your neck.
Other than those, it usually goes pretty well.
