Fairly simple analogy actually.
If you give a man a fish, he will eat today.
If you teach a man to fish, he will never again go hungry.
Democrats want help the man by giving him the fish
Republicans want to teach him to help himself

Republicans have a conservative outlook on things. We want less government involvement, more accountability, religion. I believe republican beliefs represent the American Dream. We want people to have to "pursue" what makes them happy, not have it given to them, and we want the freedom to not be dominated by government.
For example I hate snakes, to me they might as well be the devil incarnate. If the government hypothetically said Americans can no longer eat snakes, keep snakes as pets, have them in zoos, etc, I as a republican would be against it because it would be an area that the government doesn't need to be involved.
