No, America is generally a shortened term meaning the United States of America. There is, however a north american continent, and a south american continent. These continents should not be confused with their respective tectonic plates, however; as their boundaries are radically different.

If by america you mean the United States, NO. The United States, Canada, and Mexico constitute the North American continent. Depending on whose definition you like, some of the central american state are also included.

It is possible to assume that North and South America are one continent. They are connected. This makes the problem of where the dividing line should be totally moot. This supercontinent would be referred to as America or The Americas.

America might be separated in two parts north and south, but it's a continent.

AMERICA, FROM ALASKA TO ARGENTINA,
IT IS A DIVIDED CONTINENT IN 4 PARTS:
NORTH, CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA, ALSO OF THE CARIBBEAN...
THE EXPRESSION SHOULD NOT BE USED "AMERICAS",
AND NEITHER, THE RIDICULE OF THE "WESTERN HEMISPHERE"
(¿IS OCEANIA MAYBE DENOMINATED "EASTERN HEMISPHERE?)....

IF THE CORRECT EXPRESSION IS "AMERICAS",
BECAUSE ONE SAYS "LATIN AMERICA", AND NOT "LATIN AMERICAS"?...
BECAUSE ONE SAYS "NORTH AMERICA", AND NOT "NORTH AMERICAS?...
BECAUSE THIS CONTINENT IS SAID IN PLURAL?....
BECAUSE ONE DOESN'T SAY "AFRICAS", "ASIAS" OR "EUROPES"?.....

THANKS TO THEIR ARROGANCE AND PREPOTENCY,
THE CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES CALL TO THEIR NATION
AS "AMERICA", IGNORING THE REST OF THE CONTINENT
(¿THAT THE CANADIANS THOUGHT?)...
IF THE WORD "AMERICA" IT IS EXCLUSIVE FOR
"THE UNITED STATES of the continent OF AMERICA",
BECAUSE SOMETHING EXISTS CALL "LATIN AMERICA",
OR A "HISPANIC AMERICA", OR A "CENTRAL AMERICA",
OR A "NORTH AMERICA"?....

IF PEOPLE OF EUROPE IS DENOMINATED "EUROPEAN",
AND IF TO PEOPLE OF AFRICA IS DENOMINATED "AFRICAN",
¿AS WE DENOMINATE PEOPLE OF THE CONTINENT OF THE AMERICAS?...
¿¿¿???....

CONCLUSION: THE "WESTERN HEMISPHERE" THAT CALL THE YANKESS,
CALL HIMSELF "AMERICA", ALTHOUGH THEY DON'T WANT TO RECOGNIZE IT.

AH, THE WORD "AMERICA" IT IS A HISPANIC WORD, AND, TO FINISH,
PLEASE, CONSULT WHO WAS AMERIGO VESPUCCI)...

THANK YOU; I'M SORRY FOR MY BAD ENGLISH.
