It seems that some people in Nigeria have pet hyenas; they use them as bodyguards sometimes, like Doberman pincers.
I was surprised to learn this; a local small zoo near me has a hyena. He is obviously very bright (he performs 200 different behaviors on command, and really seems to enjoy it) but the keepers will never go into the cage with him. They don't trust him.
