If I were a Medieval knight, I would have the beliefs of a knight of that period, I would probably anticipate an easy victory with plenty of loot, and I would go if I were reasonably certain that no one would steal my wife or castle while I was gone.

Yes, my Church, my nation and my family are in danger.

Muslim armies had conquered much of northern Africa, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, and Spain, which had been some of the most heavily Christian areas in the world.

Thousands, and possibly millions, of Christians died during this drive to eventually bring the entire world under Islam.

The First Crusade was launched in 1095 by Pope Urban II to check the advance of the Muslims and regain control of the city of Jerusalem and the Holy Land.

I am sure that some atrocities were committed by both sides during this war but by most people's judgment this was a just war.

Well, remember that if you were alive in the middle ages your beliefs would be different. If the Pope came to you calling for a Crusade to refuse would be a considerable dishonor to you and your family. Going would have been a considerable honor to go. I would go, because of my honor, and it was what I'd been trained to do.
