"Edwards, a former Democratic senator from North Carolina, says the federal government should underwrite universal pre-kindergarten, create matching savings accounts for low-income people, mandate a minimum wage of $9.50 and provide a million new Section 8 housing vouchers for the poor. He also pledged to start a government-funded public higher education program called "College for Everyone." "

Underwriting:

4. to bind oneself to contribute a sum of money (to what
ever your underwriting).

Has anyone stopped to think why Edwards, a democrat, couldn't keep a US Senate seat from a State that routinely elects democrats to satewide offices?

We found him personally untrustworthy.

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the Public Treasury. You miss the point. The point is that we can spend 'our' tax dollars anyway we want. We can spend them on a bloated military, or we can spend them on venues that return more money than put in or at least break even. As it is, we spend a massive amount of borrowed money on a military designed to re-fight WW2 in Europe. With a degree of thought and forward thinking the US could have UNIVERSAL HEALTH INSURANCE and UNIVERSAL HIGHER EDUCATION and we could defend the continental United States as well. The US is a sea and air power, not a land power. Technology, not troops is the key to our defense. End the war in Iraq and start thinking about real problems. That's the ticket!

read the story at the link you provided no mention of free anywhere. obviously you feel no need for us to help those in need. no reason to make sure health insurance is accessible and affordable. you obviously feel you are already doing more then your part in helping America become the best it can be. i do not want anyone getting anything free! i do expect anyone receiving assistance to work, to assist others, to serve their community. i expect businesses that receive tax breaks and incentives to give back in assistance in their communities. the government can do good and it does not have to be free. if you are going to make statements and offer up proof of your statements then at least get it right.

I'm already getting free college up to a 2 year degree. It's North Carolina's Early College Program.

This state has a lot of education programs. And Edwards is North Carolinian.

Well, the state pays for college up untill I graduate high school. Then I'm on my own. Excelent program though. I love it. I'm all for Edwards.

But no free lunch. I'll live.

Did you ever get the details on the "free" stuff? Obviously not. Chances are very slim that Edwards is going to be elected and therefore is no one to worry about anyway.

Why not. We have grant programs under the republican administration that offer free college scholarships to russian students to be educated in America. Are we not as good as the russians?

Considering that the US gives Israel billions which affords their kids virtually free college. Why not?

OR, how about a GPA based percentage for college tuition?

4.0 = 100% tuition paid
3.0 - 3.9 = 80%
2.0 - 2.9 = 60%

Rather than only investing in ways to wage war, I think investing in our youth's education would yield a better society and a larger tax base to allow lower taxes.

John Edwards never said health care would be free. Like every other country in the industrialized world, it would be paid through taxes. What's wrong with universal pre-kindergarten? Sounds like a better policy than doubling the National Debt like Bush.

Vote John Edwards

And this is the main falacy in the apparent democratic ideology - and clearly reflected in their distain for the military and their ideolistic proposals to dole out everything for "free."
Newsflash - I don't want to give my lazy neighbor free health care nor do I want to give his off spring higher education by working even more hours in order to retain a "take-home" pay sufficient to care - in a self sufficient way - for my own family.
My tax dollars are already taking up a large enough portion of the social welfare pie.

Everytime I hear John Edwards speak, all I hear are the flatulent emissions from the southbound end of a northbound jackass; something that does not sound too good, usually stinks to high heaven, and disappears in the wind.

Next stupid question, please.
