No, social security doesn't have the authority to close checking accounts. If SSA direct deposited money into the account that wasn't due, they would remove that money.

The executor of the decease's estate would have to deal with closing bank accounts.

Social Security does not have the authority to close someone's bank account. When a person passes away Social Security will simply stop sending checks every month.

They get their money back if you didn't live until the end of the month. I don't think they close the acct.
