Vonnegut tied alot of historical events into his work. He also drew alot of from his personal experiences and wove fantastical stories from them. Think Slaughterhouse-Five and the fire bombings of Dresden, the execution of a WW II soldier--Private Slovik--were alluded to. But Slaughterhouse-Five was just a crazy ride that inlcuded aliens and prison-like captivity on another planet, too. Regarding his unique pessissism, think "Thumbing your nose at God," from "Cat's Cradle." He created an entire religion full of terms and all, for God's sake.
Woe the invention of Ice-9.
Are you part of my granfaloon? :-)
Vonnegut was an incredibly unique writer. He was a great writer. He made you sit back and go, "Wow."
