How can water be softened and what are the health concerns regarding chemically softened water?

I think you can add salt to soften water, health concerns would probably be the added sodium to your water..........

One usually passes hard water with Ca++ and Mg++ ions through a column of zeolite sand that has a lot of Na+ ions at the active sites. As water passes through, the zeolite traps Ca++ and Mg++ and releases Na+. This is good for washing, because soap produces insoluble scum with Ca++ and Mg++ but not with Na+. Drinking softened water can be hazardous to health, because the person keeps on getting a dose of sodium, which can cause high blood pressure and other diseases.

hard water as is called contains along with other salt, calsium salt and magnesium salts which give the term hard water. soft water on the other hand doesnot contain Ca++ or Mg++ ions. usin ion exchange resin water can be softened in one resin casium and magnesium ion are adsorbe and in other resin sulphate, phosphate etc. ions are adsorbed. makin water soft.
