I am an afterschool teacher and the kids in my group (ages 6 - 12) would like to find penpals. We would prefer not to use email, and they would like to pick the states their penpals are from. Any ideas on SAFE websites I can look on? Thanks so much for your help!

Please understand that I have no experience with any of these sites. Unfortunately, anyone can pose as a kid at those web sites. So please warn your children about what personal information they should NOT give out. When in doubt, they should ask the teacher.

Maybe a more safer method is to contact specific schools in the states your children are interested in and ask them for a listing of students who would like to be penpals. Use http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_school_districts_in_the_United_States and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Lists_of_schools_in_the_United_States as a source of contact information.
To correspond with each other, they can use regular post office mail and just give out the schools address as contact information. Or they can set up a separate free email account (no personal names for usernames) with MSN or Yahoo.

Good luck.

Couldn't you get help with the School Board of obtaining School Addresses from other States and write the school and ask if they would be interested .I honestly don't know of any web sites(for safety)You may be able to get the addresses on-line and do it yourself about the Schools

Try out TruckerBuddies online. Teachers in my district have used this site and have raved about it. It's nice because they write to your children from all over the country and you can track their routes. Great geography lesson!

This is a potential mine-field!!
You should go through your school-board.
They'll have safe sites for teachers to use.
Usually, the teacher can monitor activity.
