Why is Distilled Water Hypotonic?

There is nothing present except water molecules. The "tonic" refers to osmotic pressure, which in turn is caused by ionic solutes. "Hypo" means too little, "hyper" means too much, and "iso" means just right.

Because there's nothing else in it. Therefore, when separated from any solution by a semipermeable membrane, distilled water will tend to osmose through.
