The difficulty is that this is for someone who has a heart condition, and not knowing what meds she might be on, or how they would react with natural remedies can be an issue. There are not many studies that show interaction between many natural remedies and allopathic medications. Nor do we know what dietary restrictions your Mom may have, and natural remedies are by law considered dietary supplements.

Foods high in tryptophan have often been used to help people sleep. It is also available in capsule form, and has the added benefit of helping with conditions such as depression.

Valerian root is available in a liquid form, which can be added to warm or hot drinks to help promote sleep, and is very effective for many people.

Melatonin has been used by many as a sleep aid with varying degrees of effectiveness. The proper dose is important as one can feel "drugged" in the morning with higher doses.

Certain herbal teas will help people relax.

A bath with lavender can be especially relaxing. Combined with an herbal tea, this can be part of a nightly ritual to help promote relaxation and sleep.

Consider the gentlest methods first and try to let the doctor know what methods you are using. Hopefully you have one that isn't closed to alternative therapies.

(I hate the use of the word alternative ... that should be reserved for what poses as "modern" medicine)

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!

1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.

2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.

The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.

After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net

Ohhh..and Good Luck!

Depending on the season, a warm bath is a great way to relax in order to fall asleep. If you can’t take a bath, you can give yourself a foot massage with slightly warm massage oil, sesame oil, or castor oil from a health food store. What was very helpful to me, especially when my mind was racing, was to lie in bed and listen to relaxation CDs, especially those that contain someone speaking with relaxing music in the background. Many of these CDs are available on eBay for very low prices. A helpful technique is to relax your body one part at a time. So you could relax your feet, your lower legs, upper legs, moving up from your lower belly up to your chest, etc., etc. Of course, guided relaxation methods can help, imagining yourself in the country, the beach, or whatever is most soothing to you. If you have annoying thoughts or personal issues that run thru your mind when you are trying to sleep, you might have to deal with those issues first. You might want to talk to a counselor or therapist about that. I suggest avoiding prescription sleeping pills unless nothing else helps. There are herbs that are helpful for sleep, eg, valerian root, kava kava, chamomile, hops, passion flower, skullcap. If you get the real herbs, you can make teas out of them. Otherwise get the herbs in capsule form. Probably, valerian root and kava kava are the best. You can also try trytophan, 5-HTP and melatonin (1-2 mg). I would not take melatonin for over a month. It is a hormone produced by the pineal gland. If you take too much, your pineal gland might get "lazy" and produce less melatonin naturally. Life Extension and TwinLabs are probably the best brands, in that order.

I was using a high dose vitamin c supplement with a little melatonin. It worked good.

They sold it together in one pill. It worked very good. I can't remember the name of it but if you go into the health food store you should be able to find it.

Also it was like one tenth what you would take of the melatonin.

The other thing to think about is if the person can swallow big pills.

Try a glass of warm milk too.

Good luck to mom!

I use a two-fold approach. First, I spray my pillow and linen with a Chamomile & Lavender essential oil spray. Then I put in earplugs, which blocks out most sounds (it mutes my husband's snoring) but I can still hear my own rhythmic breathing. It is very soothing and helps me fall asleep and stay asleep. The lavender and chamomile both have a sleep-inducing effect. My company, God's Country Botanicals, makes a blend called Renew using pure, therapuetic-grade oils. It smells really lovely. My husband and sons love it, too!

yes indeed, your Mom should not have any problems with sleeping well, she is likely to already be taking calcium tablets with vitamin D most women take them for the bones, all she has to do is re arrange them so that she will takes a dose at night before going to bed.A glass of warm milk will help as well, if your Mum can tolerate milk, and has no lactose intolerance it is even better. She can experiment with different calcium tablets there are chewables such as Calcium citrate and Caltrate, Posture D and see which are most suitable for her.Good night zzz...........

I've tried everything to help me sleep over the years to no avail...until I came across this combination-Bach Rescue Sleep-which is completely safe, lavender essential oil on a bandana under the pillow, and a thunder machine. Works like a...dream.

Chamomile or Sleepytime tea are excellent. Warm milk works well. You could try aromatherapy using something soothing like lavender or ti tree oil. Counting your breathing and slowing it to a rate of 6-7 breaths per minute works for me. There are also homeopathic remedies like Quietude made by Boiron (for sale on amazon.com).

I have trouble sleeping for about 4 years. I have MS and have had a mild stroke. Was ready to pull my hair out when a friend suggested melatonin. IT WORKS!! Try it and I hope your mum gets some sleep.
