-They play well, or fast, or both.
-THey get famous through word of mouth.
-they have a lot of "gigs"
-They ahve a demo CD out that they can hand to ppl

they have to have raw talent for an instrument or vocals, and practice at it every day
then get an oppurtunity to get out there, like a a band invite, or a gig.
then more opportunities, more fame, and rock star status before ya know it

Being creative and constantly making good music.
That's pretty much it.
Then your demo cd and word of mouth goes around, you have a few gigs inviting some record guys to the gig to watch you play.

whell if you want to be a rock star just for the fame you shouldnt even botherm, the ones who get big get big because they love music and have a passion for it so if you dont then you'll never be a rockstar.

By being good at whatever the play, by knowing what the audience they are targetting at want, by knowing when is a cricial time to launch what, and by knowing who their influences are (keeping in mind just to be influenced, not to copy them). obviously have to have talent, and the most important, need to be loyal to their fans.
and yeah, make good music!
