I am living in Ireland and looking for one which has a large internal drum and is hard wearing? Any ideas?

A front-loader would be your best option. They use less detergent & water, spin more efficiently (thus shorten the drying time), plusthey get the clothes cleaner with less wear and tear on your garments. A truly "green" choice.

My family was always Kenmore people. They are part for part the same machine as bigger budget appliances without the price, and Sears stands behind their products, has lots of service centers, and offers them on sale A LOT. Do they have Sears Roebuck in Ireland?

My recommendation is a front loader, to save you water. You don't have to switch detergents, just use less for less sudsing which is how these detergents are formulated. So you can keep whatever brand, esp if it is a budget brand. Fischer Pykel has a front load style washer (water saving) that loads from the top.

IF you are designing a laundry area from the walls in, I would also recommend a gray water sink. This filters out your wash cycle water, purifies it, reuses it as rinse water to save even more water. Properly drained, this can also be sent away from your regular septic or sewer system, to drain into your garden etc. ...theoretically you will have used that water three times instead of once. (wash, rinse, and water the garden)Another consideration if you can spare the room, and have a lot of laundry to do...is to think about a way to include a second dryer...this way your drying keeps up with the washing without that pause.

Note that if you are buying a new dryer, some newer models claim to dry as fast as a wash cycle takes, so the second dryer would be unnecessary.

For a family's worth of laundry, consider two sets of stackables. Same floorplan as usual, twice the machinery to get done in half the time.

Maytag, is always the best, unless of course you go a few dollars higher and get Martha Stewart appliances, they are longlasting, and top of the line.

Definitely a Maytag, I had one for about 20 years, never had any problems with it.
