im at the beach near port prospect and wolf/dog is following me

The random monsters will drop monster coins, and also you will eventually be able to catch them for monster battles. You will meet a man named Morrie and he will request that you fight 3 different monsters. Once you defeat them and send them to Morrie's, you will be able to compete in the monster arena, and catch more monsters.

The dogs that will follow you near a town are just fluff. They don't do anything.
