I am nursing and cant' take cough syrup. I am coughing and coughing and my throat hurts if I eat something rough, so I am on oatmeal cereal and soup.. and with nursing I am SO hungry.... what can I take?

My dad used to gargle vinegar, it really does work. Just add some vinegar to some warm water and perhaps a little sugar and then gargle for a few seconds. It doesn't taste all that pleasant it does work, honest.

Try chocolate. It works like a cough drop but better. There is a natural chemical in chocolate found in many cough medicines that will sooth your throat. It will make the coughing easier and and less painful on the throat.

There is nothing you can do to actually stop coughing because coughing is a way to get rid of the irritant in your throat and lungs.

Mix some honey with some lemon juice. Warm it and drink it nice and slow..
It soothes the pain.

This is an old choir trick for sore throats/vocal cords.

Slice a lemon or lime thinny with the peel, add some brown sugar (not too much) and some honey (optional) into a small bowl and steam it until all the sugar dissolve, eat the lemon or lime it will tase bitter and sour but it will help.

Hot beverages are good. I don't use honey, but agave nectar in my tea. Hot soups. Ricola makes pretty good herbal throat drops; I'm a fan of the lemon mint.

Ginger is very good for a sore throat it can be taken is tea you can buy ginger tea from most places and its quite pleasant to taste.

I just want to add another vote for lemon. I usually use the liquid extract that comes in the plastic looking lemon bottle and just gargle it for a few seconds.

Gargle with warm salt water. Honey and lemon help also. Just mix honey and lemon and sip it.

You could try gargling warm salt water. It should ease the pain for a little while.
