Matt Groening grew up in Portland, Oregon, and much of Springfield and The Simpsons can be linked to various parts of this city.

Nuclear power plants in the United States are located in every state EXCEPT Alaska, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Indiana, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming.

The Springfield nuclear plant probably pays homage to the Trojan plant outside of Portland which actually was closed and decommissioned due to the incompetence of its operating personnel in a major scandal shortly before the Simpsons began.

"The Simpsons takes place in the fictional American town of Springfield, without any geographical coordinates or references to US states that might identify which part of the country it represents. Nevertheless, fans have tried to determine the town's location by taking the town's characteristics, surrounding geography, and nearby landmarks as clues. As a response, the show has become intentionally evasive in regard to Springfield's location. The name "Springfield" is a common one in America and appears in over half of the states. Springfield's geography, and that of its surroundings, contain coastlines, deserts, vast farmland, tall mountains, or whatever the story or joke requires. Despite this, Groening has said that Springfield has much in common with Portland, Oregon, the city where he grew up."

They never say in the show. It's just supposed to be Anytown, USA.
But when the Simpsons movie came out, the town of Springfield in Vermont won a contest as the official hometown.

In the recent movie the family escapes to Alaska and the journey from Springfield appears lengthy and quite difficult. I deduce therefore that Springfield is not actually in Alaska.

In on of the episodes (a parody of MTV's Behind the Music) it said they lived in Kentucky. Other people said they live in Nevada, which I doubt. They do NOT live in Vermont. That was just the state people voted to hold the Simpson's Movie premiere.

Its in the state that is contains...

a ocean shore
a major maountain range
a river with only 1 bridge leading our of town
a city named "Capital City"
a large nearby desert

In other words its in a completely fictional state in a fictional USA.

Springfield is wherever it needs to be to make whatever story the writers want to tell work.

the show sometimes gives you an inkling as to where it might be, then will contradict itself in another episode.
eg. in one episode, springfield was close to the mexican border, but in another, its driving distance from new york (how long would it take to drive from california to ny ?)

they drove to las vegas, florida ( i think), canada......you see my point....everyone has an opinion, but its always contradicted somewhere.
