No- it will shorten the life of the lamp and/or dimmer and cause overheating of them. Use a dimmable cfl lamp (Digiflux) and get the best of both worlds.

Using a long life bulb for a dimmer switch will reduce the life span of the dimmer switch. It will burn out.

Home Depot carries a small selection of energy smart bulbs, the fluorescent Edison based bulbs, that support dimming. I assume these are what you are referring to. The come in a variety of sizes most commonly used too. I have never used them so I can't tell you how well they may work. If you do decide to get them ask if they work on regular magnetic dimmers. Surely they do but just good to ask.
