There are 20 pencils in a box, a mixture of green, red and blue.

If there are 9 red and 5 blue how many green ones are there?

Are there any mathematicians out there who can give me the answer and how you arrived at it?

I've been working on this for several hours and it's giving me a headache.

Many thanks :-)

Are you serious??? This is the sort of thing most of us were doing in second and third grade. On the off chance that you might actually be stumped; here we go.

Tree kinds of pencils
9 red, 5 blue, Unknown green = 20

14 non-green + green = 20

Subtract 14 from both sides of the equation.

green = 6

9 red + 5 blue + 6 green = 20 pencils total.

red + green + blue = 20 pencils

9 + green + 5 = 20

14 + green = 20

What is the difference between 20 and 14?

20-14 = 6 green pencils

total no. of pencils=no.of red pencils+no. of green pencils +no. of blue pencils
20=9+5+green pencils
green pencils=20-(9+5)=20-14=6
sdquare on both the siddes
u get
(green pencils)^2=6^2
green pencils=6 or -6
however since there cant be negative no. of pencils therefore we conclude that that the right answer must be 6 . however if u cube on both the sides we see that there are imaginary number of pencils how ever we still find that there are 6 pencils.

Hi,
Try writing an English equation on these.
No. red pencils + No. blue pencils + No. green pencils = 20
R + B + G = 20
9 +5 +G = 20
14+G=20
G= 20-14
G=6

A practical solution here.
You have 20 fingers/toes.
Get some nail varnish and paint your nails, 9 of them red and 5 of them blue.
Then count the ones you haven't painted!! There's your answer.
