How can I make my knit stitches at the end/beginning of a row tighter?

I have been knitting for a couple of years, but can't seem to get my stitches at the end and/or beginning of rows as tight and even as the rest of the work. The loop is always so huge. It seems to even out as the work is stretched from weight and such, but I've seen many knitters pieces as they go and all of their edges are so tight and beautiful.

I don't know how you are casting on but she shows a couple of different ways of casting on. I've has luck with the single needle way. As far as binding off is concerned mine are loose too. Maybe there is a way of binding off using a crochet hook that will work for you.

I have the problem of too big stitches also if I don't pay close attention to the first couple of stitches. As Lebamom said you need to keep a good fairly tight tension on the first couple of stitches whether you are knitting, purling or slipping the first stitch.

The easiest way to keep a nice tight edge is to slip the first stitch on every row instead of knitting it. This creates a nice tight edge.

I often do this - slip the first stitch of each row as if to knit or purl in keeping with your pattern. It solves the problem easily.

I have that problem too sometimes, and I just try to hold my yarn REALLy tight the 1st and last 2 stitches of each row....sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but nothing else seems to help at all.
