My period was a week and a half late before I got a + result on one of the early response tests.
Part of that was because I ovulated really late in my cycle, and it takes a certain number of days after ovulation before you'll get a positive result. If you tend to ovulate later in your cycle than the textbook female, it will take longer for you to get a positive than that textbook female.
You can get a false negative from a HPT, or you might not be pregnant. You can wait a little longer, testing every other day or so, or you could call your dr about a blood test.
www.peeonastick.com is a great resource to understand how home pregnancy tests work.

With my first, I got a positive 4 days before my missed period and with this pregnancy I got a positive the day before my missed period (I tested the next two days also just to make sure). I'm 15 weeks pregnant.

I was 3 days late when I took my test and it came out positive. I took two to make sure though and got a + both times.
