I have one female guppy in my one gallon tank with a hood and an undergravel filter. I do partial water changes every few days. I've had my guppy since I started the tank about 5 weeks ago. She seems to be doing great, shes very energetic. I was wondering if I should add one more fish (maybe another female guppy) to the tank to keep her company. I know guppies do better with other fish, but I also realize that I have a very small tank.

Please don't tell me to get a bigger tank. I am not able to do that right now. I'm just asking what will be better for my guppy, keeping her the only fish or adding one more.

I would say leave it. The rule is one gallon of water per inch of fish. You may find that adding another fish to such a small habitat will do more harm than good, i.e. stress. If your guppy is thriving now, don't change anything.

For a gallon tank, like you describe, you can safely add 2 more guppy sized fish, a snail(or other small scavenger) and some live plants.Even if you get a male guppy, and they have fry, not all of them will survive(some would get eaten) and you can generally tell by looking at it if a tank is over crowded or not. If you do add other fish to the tank, make sure you condition the water, because you do not want to accidentally introduce a disease into the tank.

Guppies are great fish to have with eachother. I do have to warn you, if you put a male and a female in with eachother, they WILL mate. I started out with 2 guppies, and ended up with about 1,000. It may cause you to have to get a seperate tank for the babies, or just a bigger tank (I'm not telling you to, just telling what might happen).

Your tank is small, but considering that guppies are small, you should be able to add one more. As a rule you should have one gallon per one inch of fish.

if u get a bigger tank then i think u should. cuz if u have a small tank and u want 2 fish then they might be crowded in there and that might be uncomfortable. but i think that another guppy would be good cuz then the other one wont be lonely. but remember u might want to get a bigger tank.

1 more female guppy wont hurt. they quite tiny. but dont get a male, unless you want loads and loads of babies. They will do just fine, you doing water changes, so you keeping tank healthy.
best of luck.

Yes,! Get the party going. Well, keep things proper, and respectable as far as responsibility and space, and nutrition goes. Ask the people who sell you fish what is the maximum amount you need (space-wise) you can afford to populate, without purchasing a larger tank.
Good Luck!

You could add one more small fish . If u gat a male guppy they mite mate or a couple of small tetras , but u will want to check your PH often .

Make sure its not the opposite sex because guppies breed like rabbits.
